Cross Country competes at states

The John Paul II Catholic High School cross country program ended the season by participating in the NCISAA 3A state meet Friday morning at Hagan Stone Park near Greensboro. Led again by freshman Gabe Lewis (39th, 18:21.5), senior Alex Peterson (69th, 19:22.5) and sophomore Estevan Morales (81st, 19:42.3), the Saints totaled 435 points to finished 16th in the team competition behind champion Forsyth Country Day (43).

JPII’s top three runners were followed by seniors Tyler Moore (115th, 21:54.1) and Miguel Morales (121st, 22:18.1), freshman Michael Dunn (125th, 22:39.1) and sophomore Davis Walsh (128th, 23:29.9).

Lewis’ time was the best time turned in by any runner from the CPIC today. Parrot finished 19th in the 3A state meet, and in the smaller 2A meet Epiphany was eighth, Wayne Country Day was 10th, Wayne Christian was 13th and Greenfield was 19th.

Sophomore Emma Anderson represented JPII in the 3A girls meet.

This was the high school finale for Peterson, Moore and Miguel Morales.

“Those three guys were exceptional leaders for us this season,” coach Joe Corley said. “Tyler has been with us for three years and has come a long way since he started. Alex joined as a junior and has been a standout leader on and off the course since. And what can you say about Miguel? Along with being fantastic teammate, he’s just an all-around great young man with a bright future.”
