The John Paul II Catholic High School baseball team totaled 17 hits as it defeated host Coastal Christian 19-4 in six innings on Thursday.

The Saints — who also took advantage of eight walks, two hit batsmen, and three errors by Coastal — improved to 9-6 overall going into a tournament contest Friday, April 7, at Bear Grass against Nash Central. The Centurions, who will join the CPIC next season, dropped to 6-7.

Senior Axel Keller, now batting a team-best .450, led JPII with three hits and also scored four runs, drove in one, and had a walk. James Donofrio, Ray Shaw, J.T. Williams, Ryker Butcher (2 doubles), Max Mason, and Noah Sugg had a pair of hits each, and Tyler Winkler and Nike Wiggins had one apiece. Mason led the team with four RBI.

Williams was credited with the pitching victory, striking out five in his two innings of work and allowing only one hit. Ethan Staton pitched effectively in his three innings, and Donofrio closed it out in the sixth.

JPII was scheduled to play a second game in the Bear Grass tournament on Saturday, but that has been canceled because of the weather. The Saints will be on spring break next week and won’t return to the field until April 18 at Wayne Christian. That’s part of a three-game week, with a home contest against Greenfield on April 20 and a trip to Wake Christian the next day.
